XS, the newest restaurant in the Jay's empire that dominates half a North Charles Street block, delivers the excess its unusual moniker promises. Luckily for the hungry and thirsty, this excess comes in the form of choices and ambience, not lofty prices and foo-foo attitudes. Cathedral ceilings, exposed brick and ductwork and lots of silvery accents lend a hip feel to this twin-level eatery, where breakfast is served all day long, sushi is lovingly prepared before your eyes, specialty coffee drinks will start or get you through your day, and potent potables are a perfect quarry before or after a night at the symphony, opera or theater. Who doesn't love quiche, Belgian waffles, triple-thick French toast, hotcakes, eggs or omelets -- and at XS, you can indulge this craving whenever the mood strikes. Enjoy Columbian decaf, mocha java, French roast or Costa Rican blends; mochas, lattes, cappuccino and espresso are also available. Eat at the sushi bar, or take treats upstairs to the quaint dining room. Sushi and sashimi come in single-piece orders or tapas-like plates, and noodle and rice dishes are offered. Paninis, wraps, salads, tempura dishes and pastry/muffin treats round out the eclectic menu. -- Pete Kerzel
